NecroGnomicon

A tip of the Silk Lined Steel Helm goes to Gnomad, who originally collected much of the information here and kept interest going through some painful stages of tinkering. Those who recall the multiple failures trying to recreate the Collapsible Fishing Pole will know what I mean. He will be remembered fondly.

Further honors go to Fulcrum, who compiled the original Tinkering Compendium. The Compendium rivals the very Journals themselves when it comes to useful knowledge, and I have unashamedly stolen some of this information directly from there.

Tinkered Goods

These items represent the standard selection of tinkered goods, and can be assembled in any toolbox. The necessary components are easily available in the vicinity of Ak'Anon, with the exception of those items available from your local smith or potter. If a component is listed more than once, more than one is required. The costs mentioned are based on a gnome with typical charisma and an indifferent relationship to the vendors, added up for all of the components and rounded up to the nearest coin; your prices may vary.

Tinker wisely, for attempting something far beyond your current level of skill will result in losing great gobs of platinum. This listing is roughly in the order of difficulty, as best we know.

Gadget Components Trivial Point Cost
Animated Bait Cork
Spriket
< 50 4 cp

It's bait. It looks like regular bait, works like regular bait, and costs just as much as regular bait. Tinkered bait is the only bait available at the Overthere outpost.
Compass Cork
Pie Tin
Skewers
Static Orb
Water Flask
< 50 3 pp

You might have seen one of these for sale, as a few merchants carry them. Using the compass tells you what direction you're facing. Many gnomish explorers have a compass to thank for their survival.
Firewater Gnomish Spirits
Water Flask
< 50 8 sp

Firewater is the powering agent for several tinkered items, but it isn't terribly useful by itself. No self-respecting gnome would drink watered-down Gnomish Spirits.
Gnomish Fireworks Bat Wing
Firewater
Metal Shaft
< 50 2 gp

Mixing up a batch of these will give you four separate pieces of gnomish fireworks, each one with a slightly different effect. Early attempts at fireworks were, shall we say, less impressive than one might have wanted. The effects have improved over time.
Collapsible Fishing Pole Gnomish Bolts
Metal Rod
Metal Rod
Metal Rod
< 50 7 pp

The long-lost Collapsible Fishing Pole is less than half the weight of a standard fishing pole and fits into smaller containers. It works just like a fishing pole ought to. It also breaks just as often as a regular fishing pole, despite costing 30 times as much.
Mechanized Lockpicks Gear
Lockpicks
Rat Ears
Sprocket
62 – 68 18 pp

Borrow a standard set of lockpicks from a rogue or a bard, make your improvements, and hand it back. We can hope that the mechanized lockpicks do a better job, but no one seems to think so.
Flameless Lantern Firewater
Large Lantern
Metal Twine
68 2 pp

Hold it like a lantern, and it provides a great deal of light. Unlike a regular lantern, this one will work underwater. Since not too many gnomes carry lanterns these days, it can also make for a good conversation piece.
Standard Bow Cams Gear
Gnomish Bolts
Grease
75 15 pp

These cams can be used by a skilled fletcher to create powerful bows (which would technically make them a bowyer, but we won't get into that). Unlike many other tinkered items, this is cheaper to make than it is to buy, so the standard bow cam enjoys some small degree of popularity.
Spyglass Bottle
Collapsible Fishing Pole
Metal Rod
Metal Twine
Reflective Shard
95 26 pp

If you haven't broken your collapsible fishing pole yet, this is the logical thing to do with it when you're done fishing. The effects of the spyglass are similar to a wizard's Glimpse spell, giving the user magnified vision. This can be useful at times, and the spyglass is therefore one of the better sellers.
Stalking Probes Bottle
Firewater
Gear
Gear
Metal Rod
102 18 pp

This curious device allows the user to send out a giant floating eyeball to survey an area, similar to the conjuration known as the Eye of Zomm. The probes hold five charges.
Thermal Cloak Firewater
Metal Rod
Tattered Gnomish Cloak
102 > 1 pp

Some simple alterations to one of the Tattered Gnomish Cloaks found in Solusek's Eye bring about dramatic improvements. Any gnome can wear this fine bit of protection.

Thermal Cloak
AC 6
SV COLD +20
Gem Cutter Diamond Dust
Firewater
Grease
Metal Fastening
Metal Rod
Standard Bow Cams
116 19 pp

There are two oddities concerning the Gem Cutter. First, Diamond Dust only seems to be found on certain ice giants (possibly as a cosmetic). Second, no one has figured out how to make the darned thing work. You might suspect that, somehow, it cuts gems. You would be wrong. Rumors state that a paladin once commissioned a master tinker to devise the contraption to fit gems for a sword hilt, but never came back to collect the device. (He didn't come through with the payment, either. Probably an elf. With any luck, he died miserably.)
Powered Gloves Firewater
Gear
Metal Twine
Sprocket
Steel Lined Gloves
122 45 pp

If you often find yourself a bit overburdened, you can fashion a pair of these fine gloves that any gnome can use. They don't quite qualify as armor, but they do give an extra bit of strength while weighing next to nothing.

Powered Gloves
STR +5
Catapult Firewater
Gear
Metal Twine
Shaped Ashwood Bow
Sproket
135 > 55 pp

Here's another example of how gnomes drive themselves crazy. You'll need a skilled fletcher to create the bow (be sure they use hemp string!), and prices will vary. As if that weren't frustrating enough, no one has yet succeeding in getting any action out of thing, putting it into the same category as the Gem Cutter. You might expect it to throw rocks. A few lines from an old tinker's journal suggest that what we call the Catapult is merely a single portion of a larger device, but what that larger device might be isn't revealed.
Aqualung Fine Coral Mesh
Fresh Fish
Gnomish Bolts
Metal Rod
Metal Twine
Silk Lined Steel Helm
148 262 pp

A legendary item that was finally rediscovered, the aqualung allows the wearer to, not surprisingly, breath underwater. A bit heavy but otherwise a remarkably good design.

Aqualung
AC 1
Effect: Breath of the Dead
Charges: 50
Rebreather Aqualung
Firewater
Lime Coated Meshing
Metal Fastening
Platemail Helm
Shark Skin Tubing
175 > 916 pp

A direct improvement on an existing aqualung, this upgrade uses no charges and never leaves you gasping for air deep beneath the waves. Oddly enough, a number of warriors have been asking about these lately. The Platemail Helm should be sizeable – the medium human-fitting size works – to be sure that there's sufficient room for the tinkered bits.

Rebreather
AC 1
Effect: Enduring Breath

Velious Tinkering

The Pirates of Iceclad have providing us with a few more odds and ends. Their most significant contribution, however, is revealing the ancient secrets of Watchman armor.

These items can only be assembled in the Deluxe Toolbox, and the necessary components are mostly available from the pirates themselves. Costs are approximate.

Gadget Components Trivial Point Cost
Telescopic Eyepatch Gnomish Bolts
Low Quality Dire Wolf Fur
Reflective Shard
Velium Lens
82 25 pp

This compact little device is the improved version of the Spyglass. Put it right on your face and activate it for vision which can only be described as, well, telescopic.

Telescopic Eyepatch
AC 3
Effect: Telescope
Footwarming Boots Gnomish Bolts
Metal Rod
Metal Rod
Metal Twine
Sharkskin Tubing
Small Fine Plate Boots
> 168 > 200 pp

An excellent set of plate boots to – yes – keep your feet warm. These "hotfoots" were designed for the those small-footed types who could normally wear plate armor. Don't used boots that have been stained, it corrodes the tubing.

Footwarming Boots
AC 10
SV COLD +5
Gnomish Vanishing Device Class Five Mana Battery
Diamond
Gnomish Bolts
Haze Panther Eye
Small Lantern
Steel Wire
Reflective Shard
> 50 lots of pp

This expensive bit of tinkering is held in the off-hand and, with a flick of the switch, renders the holder invisible. There are only five charges, but it can be recharged by replacing the mana battery.

The astute gnome will notice that very few of these items offer much to the necromancer. This may change in the future as tinkering advances; do not be discouraged. Tinkering is a worthy pursuit for any gnome.

If you can help narrow down some of the less-than-exact trivial points, feel free to let me know and I'll make the appropriate changes.

[Translator's Note: The art of Tinkering has advanced greatly since Mr. Undercrypt's last notes; thus, this list should be considered as a starting point only. Consult the abovementioned Tinkering Compendium for more current information. – B]
